Philanthropy Insider

In this special philanthropy publication, we explore giving with intention and impact.

In our feature article, we had the great pleasure of speaking with Lin-Manuel Miranda, the now universally known creator of the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” along with his father Luis, their director of philanthropy, Sara Elisa Miller, and current Hispanic Federation President José Calderón. The Miranda family has a deeply ingrained tradition of philanthropy. Luis helped found the Hispanic Federation in 1990 to provide services to and advocate for the Latino community, and now, the Miranda family has launched a new donor-advised fund program with the Federation. The Mirandas’ mission is to motivate others to echo their commitment to philanthropy. I hope you find their story as inspirational as I do.

In addition, we cover key areas of the philanthropic journey, highlighting questions to consider when thinking about how to give back and how BBH can help. The philanthropic journey is a process that often starts with articulating a mission and identifying the best legal structure, and then moves to defining a strategy, selecting grant recipients and monitoring impact. No matter where our clients are on this journey, we help them address all elements of their philanthropic goals and plans so they can create a lasting, positive impact through the support of their chosen causes, communities and loved ones.

Also in this issue, we sit down with philanthropist Ann Smead to discuss her work at the University of Colorado Boulder. She is a disciplined philanthropist who is strategic in executing on her philanthropic mission. She speaks with us about the importance of measuring outcomes and her advice for today’s philanthropists.

In another interview, we sit down with philanthropist Lea Culver, co-founder of fast-casual restaurant chain Culver’s, to discuss the work of the Culver Foundation, her personal approach to philanthropy and how she has engaged the next generation in her giving.

In addition, Senior Wealth Planner Kerri Mast discusses a common dilemma among philanthropically inclined individuals: the decision to set up a private foundation vs. a donor advised fund.

Finally, in another article, Mast explores innovative solutions today’s philanthropists are using, including implementing new organizational structures, maximizing the impact of their investments and making nontraditional grants.
